In April of 2003, Kozo The Hippo made his debut in a short animation, showcasing his moves to Sisqo's "The Thong Song." This was two years before YouTube launched, and a time when it was still rare for content to go viral, as there was no main channel for distribution. Everything was based on word of mouth, and the sharing of links and attachments. It was during this period that Kozo, unexpectedly and to our great surprise, went viral. Within a couple months our website was receiving over 40,000 hits per day and it brought down our server multiple times. But after receiving some threatening letters and take down notices from the music publishers, all Kozo content was taken down and we tried (in vain) to contact others hosting the animation to comply as well. Needless to say this was an exercise in futility and although we could not longer host Kozo, his popularity spread like wildfire and he appeared on television throughout Europe, Australia, Brazil and even the Dominican Republic. Today his legend lives on in numerous fan-created YouTube videos. As of this year, on YouTube alone, he has been viewed over 350 million times and continues to bring silliness and joy to the masses! Stay tuned for more Kozo content, as he is currently being developed for an animated TV series.
